INTRODUCTION

Church is CS: Global Offensive map, for wingman mode.

Wingman mode is a 2 vs 2 bomb - defuse with only one bomb site and the round duration is 1min 30s

My work

  • Level Design

  • Block Out

Intentions

  • Adapt 4 square design on a wingman

  • Close quarter combat map

  • Vertical and central bombsite

My process

Define intentions and metrics

The four square layout was explained by Dave Jhonston, that's the method with the one he designed "de_dust2", which is the most iconic CS map.

This kind of layout is based on three navigation axis, all of this axis are interconnected, giving rotation possibilities for each team.

I was wanted to apply this method on a wingman map. It gives opportunities to rotate around a central point of the map that is the bombsite.

A close quarter combat map

Because of the team size and round duration, the principle intention is to quickly put the players in the action, by fighting or just takes information and offer possibilities to change their strategy.

This map promote the using of Short and Mid Range weapons

Bombsite

In Counter Strike, the bombsite is the objective. Counter Terrorist should defend him, and terrorist has to attack it.

The intention is to make the bombsite, the central element of the map.

Support by the four square layout that promotes rotations around the bombsite. And the close-quarter combat style that pushes the terrorist team to attack the site as quickly as possible in order to gain control of the site.

The first step was to put a landmark to unconsciously orient the player to this part of the map and show the importance of this place. The landmark also helps the player navigate through the map.

The bombsite is based on verticality

I wanted to makes the player feel insecure when he is in the ground with poor cover and gives him site control if he takes height. To counter, these places are easy to stuff with grenades (smokes, frag and incediary).

Grenades

One of the main mechanics in Counter Strike : Global Offensive is the utilization of grenades. Each grenade has a  particularity:

  • Flash : Blind the enemy it's useful to rush the other team

  • Smoke : Creates a medium-area smoke screen. Use to cut enemy's vision and gain map control.

  • Incendiary : Release flame on a wide area radius. Use to preventing enemy's rush or camping position

  • Frag : classical grenades that apply damage at the explosion

Here some grenade spots in the map:
